CeCe McDonald is coming to Community Pride on June 11th!

In 2012, transmisogynoir rose up violently on one fateful June night. CeCe McDonald and her friends were assaulted in the street outside of a bar by group of men. They were followed, harassed, and eventually attacked with a bottle. But she fought back.

In defending herself, the man was killed. However, the state continued continued to victimize her. They sentenced her to 41 months in a Men’s prison.

Through her compelling strength CeCe fought back at the state as well and was released after a campaign for her freedom became far-reaching and unstoppable, having served 19 months too many.

Through her story she has provided access to the rebirth of our agency, in a world that seeks to limit it every day for Black trans women. We speak the names of Dana Martin, Jazzaline Ware, Ashanti Carmon, Claire Legato, Muhlaysia Booker, Michelle Washington, Paris Cameron, Chynal Lindsay, and Chanel Scurlock.

Now, hearing CeCe’s story would be infuriating and inspiring just reading it online or something right?! Well guess what!

CeCe WILL BE HERE IN PERSON IN COLUMBUS AS OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER at the #CommunityPride Free CeCe Documentary Screening!!! (yes we are hollering)

On Tuesday June 11th at 6-9:30 in the CCAD Beeler Gallery Auditorium, we will be screening the documentary. Afterward we will have a keynote address from Cece herself, then she will participate in a panel discussion with other locally-based Black trans women and people to engage in dialogue about their perspectives and experiences. Food will be provided!
